How Developing A Growth Mindset Helps You Achieve Your Goals

Why do some people achieve their goals while other equally talented individuals always seem to fall short?

Research has shown that success is dependent upon the mindset surrounding one’s ability to change and develop abilities.  

A growth mindset is a belief that with practice, perseverance, and grit, individuals have endless potential to learn, grow, and achieve their goals. 
​
A fixed Mindset is a belief that we are born with a set amount of ability that cannot be developed or changed. 

Very simply put, people with a growth mindset experience better outcomes than individuals with fixed mindsets

Fixed Mindset

A fixed mindset is a belief that our abilities (good or bad) are carved in stone. A fixed mindset could lead to certain thoughts and actions such as:

  • I will never be able to lose weight so I might as well just have dessert
    ​
  • I’m good at math, I don’t have to study for the quiz tomorrow​

  • People don’t like me. I am just going to stay home

  • I’ll never be able to implement an exercise routine so why bother

  • Mindfulness practice is boring, I’ll never get anything out of it. I’ll just skip it today

Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities can be cultivated

Growth mindset embraces our ability to continually evolve, transform, and grow with effort, focus, and dedication.

 It encourages us to keep going and to learn from our mistakes.

It reminds us that we are all human and struggle and that making mistakes is vital to the learning process.

Growth mindset will lead to certain types of thoughts and actions such as: 

  • I did not lose weight this week. I will have to readjust my strategy. I will try eating two pieces of fruit and 2 vegetables each day this week.

  • I am anxious to go to this dinner party. I will do my best to talk to other people there.

  • Exercise is tough for me. I’ll start small and go for a twenty minute walk on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week around the block.
 
  • Mindfulness practice is boring but I know if I stick with it I will get a lot out of it.

Encouraging A Growth Mindset


​Many times utilizing a growth mindset is as simple as changing our inner dialogue in order to reframe challenges as opportunities for growth.

It all boils down to that little voice in your head. Which mindset is it echoing?

The good news is that when the voice in your head is coming from a fixed mindset perspective you can respond to it in a way that encourages a growth mindset to develop.

Instead of letting feelings such as inadequacy take centerstage, focus on how you can improve. Read more about learning how to change unhelpful thoughts. 

You can change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset if you are willing to put in the effort. 

It’s important to remember that growth and fixed mindsets show up in everyone. 

Someone might have a growth mindset about learning how to cook but a fixed mindset in their ability to lose weight.

By practicing mindfulness, we can slow down and start to become aware of the narrative in our mind and the mindset we are employing so that we can make adjustments to reach our highest potential. 

Mindfulness As A Tool To Encourage Growth Mindset

Mindfulness can help you become aware of your inner self-talk. It gives you the tools to reframe your negative beliefs into empowering ones. 

Mindfulness allows you to take responsibility for where we are at and gives us the option to purposely improve ourselves. 

It’s important to engage with a growth mindset while practicing mindfulness.

Try responding to resistance with these helpful growth-mindset statements:

  • Mindfulness is a practice, not a perfection

  • Everyone can learn mindfulness . It takes practice and persistence. 

  • My brain is like a muscle that grows. The more I practice mindfulness, the easier it will become. 

  • It’s OK if I struggle in my mindfulness practice. Mistakes are opportunities for learning.
